Thanks to strict government regulations on emissions, safety, and efficiency, the 1972 Mustang dropped the 429 engines from the previous year, and featured only 302 and 351 cubic-inch engines in the lineup. Additionally, horsepower for those engines dropped. No other changes, save for a different style gas cap on the Mach 1, occurred for 1972 versus the 1971 model.
